How to use Chromecast with a VPN?

A Chromecast is a handy tool that allows your TV to stream video content from your favorite streaming sites like Netflix and HULU. However, because many of these streaming sites use geo-blocking to limit the number of TV shows available, many users complain of not finding their favorite show to watch.

A VPN can solve the problem by masking your IP address, but the issue here is that you can not install a VPN application directly to Chromecast or on your TV. Manufacturers have recognized this problem, and some of the newer versions come with workarounds to allow you to install a VPN, but unless you bought your TV a few years ago, this feature is unlikely to be present on your device.

So, in this Chromecast VPN guide, we show you the details of installing a VPN on Chromecast and some workaround if your device does not support a VPN.

Install a VPN on Chromecast using smart TV/Google TV

As we mentioned earlier, if you use a newer device that supports the play store, you can easily install a VPN app without much effort. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you install a VPN on smart TV.

Step 1: On a supported device, hold the Google Assistant button on your remote and say “install Surfshark VPN”.

Note: If you want to install a different VPN, just name that instead, but Surfshark VPN allows unlimited device support, and it also has a 7-day trial so you can try VPN for free

Step 2: Select Install and wait a while for the system to download and install all necessary files.

Step 3: Open VPN and follow the onscreen instructions. The process is slightly different depending on the VPN service provider, but in most instances, you have to sign up using a new account. (or log in if you already have an existing account)

Step 4: There is usually a large button you can press to establish a secured connection with your desired location. If you see a pop-up stating that the VPN connection may monitor your network traffic, click ok.

And that’s it; you can now set different locations and enjoy any geo-locked content from your favorite streaming sites.

Mirror Your Screen (Best if you have an older device)

But If you are one of the 36.9 million users who are using an older Chromecast dongle, an easy workaround is to mirror your computer screen that has VPN installed in it.

This also works in any operating system; however, the only downside is that the quality may not be the best, given you are upscaling your computer screen to a monitor.

Here is how to use Chromecast using a Google Chrome browser:

Step 1: Open your browser (Google Chrome, Safari, or anyone of your preference)

Note: The process might be slightly different if you are using other browsers, but the basics are the same. For convenience, we will use chrome, the most popular browser currently in use.

Step 2: On the top right, click the 3 dot button and click “Cast”

Step 3: Click the down arrow next to ‘Sources’ and ensure the ‘Cast tab’ is selected.

Step 4: Next, select your Chromecast device as the destination.

Step 5: You can now open your computer, turn VPN on, and mirror your screen onto your TV.

Note: There are other solutions like installing a VPN on your router or creating a virtual network yourself. But these solutions are harder to implement and require some technical knowledge.

Now you can enjoy your favorite TV show without worrying if the content is available at your location.
