Janitor vs Custodian: What’s the Difference?

In 2020, there were already 1.7 million people employed in the cleaning industry. The industry has been currently booming up to the present. Workers in this industry range from low-level hourly workers to high-level cleaning managers.

Whether you work in a small office or a huge warehouse, you need proper cleaning, and that’s where all the roles in the industry come into play.

But what are the roles of a cleaning manager? Most cleaning managers are called custodians or janitors, but what are the differences between the two?

Here’s how to tell the difference between a janitor vs custodian.

What is a Janitor?

A janitor is a staff in charge of cleaning and maintaining buildings, such as schools, hospitals, and office complexes. Janitors typically work in the evening or overnight hours when most people are not present in the building. Janitors are responsible for sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors. Apart from that, they also take charge of cleaning bathrooms; emptying trash receptacles; and performing other duties as assigned.

Some janitors may also be responsible for setting up and tearing down event equipment, such as chairs and tables. In larger buildings, janitors may work with a team of other janitorial staff.

What is a Custodian?

A custodian is an individual responsible for the safekeeping of another individual’s property or assets. The property may be tangible, such as cash, securities, or other valuables, or intangible, such as intellectual property. The custodian may be an individual, a financial institution, or a legal entity.

Property custodians may also be responsible for minor repairs and upkeep, such as changing light bulbs or fixing leaks. In some cases, custodians may be responsible for more significant repairs or overseeing the work of outside contractors. Custodians typically work during the day, although some may work overnight shifts.

What Makes the Difference Between a Janitor Vs Custodian

A janitor is someone who cleans and maintains buildings, while a custodian is someone who oversees the cleaning staff. The janitor is responsible for cleaning the bathrooms, mopping the floors, and taking out the trash. The custodian is responsible for making sure the janitorial staff is doing their job properly, and they also handle customer service.

When deciding who to hire, consider the specific needs of your property and the scope of work that needs to be done. If you need someone to primarily handle cleaning and maintenance tasks, then a janitor may be the best option. If you need someone to handle a wider range of responsibilities, then a custodian may be a better choice.

Both Janitors and Custodians Are Essential for Property Maintenance

It’s not more about what makes the difference between a janitor vs custodian. Both janitors and custodians are essential for property maintenance. They play different but important roles in keeping buildings clean and running smoothly.

When hiring for these positions, it is important to consider the specific needs of the property.
